The bell tower of the Cathedral of Gaeta is located behind the building, in Pope Gelasius Square, overlooking the Gulf of Gaeta. In Romanesque style with strong Arabic-Norman influence, it is 57 meters high. The construction began 1148 and was completed in 1279 with the construction of the apex tower.

Location

The historic Palazzo De Vio, which belonged to Cardinal Tommaso De Vio, now houses the Diocesan Museum, which was founded in the 1950s as a museum-archive to preserve classical and medieval artifacts evidence of Gaeta’s history.

Location

The church is located on a promontory overlooking the coast, about one kilometer from the city center.

Its history dates back to the late 17th century, when the Bishop of Gaeta decided to build a church dedicated to the Holy Trinity.

The church is an example of Baroque architecture, with two towers and a large entrance portal.

The “Montagna Spaccata” is one of the most striking places in Gaeta, and is connected to an ancient religious tradition that it came to light at the time of Christ’s death, when the veil of the Temple of Jerusalem was torn. Also, legend has it that St. Philip Neri lived inside the “Montagna Spaccata”, where there is a stone bed known today as “The Bed of St. Philip Neri”.

The “Grotta del Turco” is linked to an ancient religious tradition that it came to light at the time of Christ’s death, when the veil of the Jerusalem Temple was torn, and to various folk beliefs. These include the handprint of a Turkish sailor on a rock. Along the staircase that leads to the interior of the mountain, along the narrow crevice, on the right, you can see a Latin inscription and above it, an ‘eerie translucent handprint etched into the rock, which legend has it belonged to a Turkish sailor. The unbeliever, as a non-Christian, was sceptical about the sacred origin of the mountain’s clefts, but as soon as he boldly placed his hand on the rock, it immediately liquefied like wax under his fingers, leaving the crisp imprint of his hand and 5 fingers that can still be seen today.

Location

The Sanctuary of the Santissima Annunziata is one of the most important Catholic places of worship in Gaeta, located in the historic center of the city between Via dell’Annunziata and Lungomare Caboto.

From 2009 to September 27, 2014, the sanctuary performed the functions of procathedral, assuming its title, since the Cathedral of Saints Erasmus and Marcianus and St. Mary of the Assumption was closed for restoration.

The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, also known as the “Golden Chapel” or the “Golden Grotto” for its rich wooden interior decorated with pure gold, is an important place of Catholic worship in Gaeta, located in the historic center of the town, in Via Annunziata.

Location

The Cathedral of Saints Erasmus and Marcianus and of St. Mary of the Assumption is the most important place of Catholic worship in Gaeta, mother church of the homonymous Archdiocese and seat of the Parish of the Most Holy Mary Assumed into Heaven.

Serapo, Fontania, Quaranta Remi, Ariana, Arenauta, San Vito and Sant’Agostino. These 7 beaches of Gaeta are located in the long stretch of sea that goes from the rocky coast of Montagna Spaccata at the foot of Monte Orlando to the picturesque caves of Sperlonga. 10 kilometers of beach, interrupted only by small coves and rocky points. The common feature of all these beaches is the presence of very fine-grained light-colored sand, clear sea and dense Mediterranean vegetation surrounding them. At the same time, each of them has distinctive features that make them unique.

Location
The church, an integral part of the adjacent building of St. James, is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin. The church was damaged during World War II and restored thanks to the interest of Canon Alberto Giordano. The church is still consecrated and used for special occasions.

Location

Charles III had the Gate of the Forward Line built in 1737; rebuilt in 1811 and later equipped with a masonry bridge. The so-called First Gate lost its centuries-old function after the road rectification of the access to the city and the filling of the moat (1933).

Location

It is the oldest church in the city, the result of an 11th century expansion of a pre-existing early medieval temple; closed to worship in 1966, it was deconsecrated in 1972 and turned into an auditorium, owned by the Municipality of Gaeta.

Location

The building was probably constructed in the 6th century during the Gothic wars.

The structure we admire today, with an area of about 14,100 square meters, is called the Angioino-Aragonese Castle because it is composed of two connected buildings, built at two different historical moments: the lower one, called “Angioino”, built during the reign of the rulers of Angioini origin, and the higher one, called “Aragonese”, built by the rulers of the Kingdom of Naples, belonging to the dynasty of Aragonese origin.

Location

The church was built starting from 1283, thanks to donations from Charles II d’Angiò, as a place of worship attached to a convent founded by Francis of Assisi himself in 1222; it is sometimes erroneously referred to as the city cathedral because of its scenic location and elaborate architecture; the exterior, as well as the interior, is characterized by rich nineteenth-century neo-Gothic plastic decoration designed by Giacomo Guarinelli, which covers the ancient Gothic structure of the 13th-14th centuries.

They are important historical evidence of the human presence and activity in Monte Orlando in past eras and are part of the complex of fortifications and artifacts of military construction dating back to the period of Aragonese and Bourbon rule (14th-18th centuries). Today the Carolina, Ferdinando and Trabacco are preserved in good condition and clearly visible.

Location

Named after the first Chief of Staff of the Italian Army after the Unification, Enrico Cosenz, a native of Gaeta, in recent years it has undergone radical restoration and is now called the Palace of Culture, where the most important civic cultural activities are housed.

Under construction is the Demoanthropological Museum of the Sea.

Location

Monte Orlando is a 171 m high promontory and a natural extension of the Aurunci Mountains towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. Trails allow hiking and biking among the green and majestic views. Fishing is allowed only in some coastal areas of Monte Orlando that are not managed by the Park Authority. On the cliff overlooking the sea, there are also numerous sport and traditional climbing routes.

The Mausoleum is a funerary building that stands on Monte Orlando, the building was built at the behest of Lucio Munazio Planco, a Roman soldier and politician of the Republican period, it dates back to 22 B.C. and is perfectly circular in shape with a tumulus roof that no longer exists today. The diameter of the structure is 29.54 meters, the external perimeter is 93.10 meters and the height is 9 meters.

Minturno Tourist Attractions

Location

The Theatre of Minturnae (known as the Roman Theatre) was built at the beginning of the first century AD, in the sector north of the Republican Forum, by removing a section of the older polygonal walls. The layout of the theater is the usual one with a distinction of the space in three parts. The total seating capacity was calculated at 4600. After restorations in the 1940s, the seating tiers were partially reconstructed and the ambulatories below were also restored for the installation of an Antiquarium.

Location

The former Cathedral of St. Peter was built between the 9th and 12th centuries. It has undergone several modifications over the years. The three-storey bell tower, with mullioned windows resting on two Corinthian capitals, rises centrally on the pròtiro. The nave is covered with wooden coffered panels and central gilded rosettes. In the center is the crest with the papal tiara and the keys of St. Peter.

Location

The castle stands on the southwest side of the peak of Minturno, following the natural conformation of the fortress. It is made up of a cylindrical keep, a patrol road and an internal portico with ogival arches that recall the late Romanesque Amalfi structures. The building appears today in the architectural forms that have been layered over the centuries. According to recent research, the construction of the castle is attributed to Bishop Leo (around the 9th century), who we find mentioned in the original Cassinese charter no. 5 of 839. It was the residence of the most noble people who lived in Traetto.

Formia Tourist Attractions

Location

The Tower of Mola is located in the seaside district of Formia. The massive cylindrical tower is what remains of the castle built at the end of the 13th century by Charles II d’Angiò, King of Naples, and almost completely destroyed by bombing during World War II. It is entered through a 16th century portal, and over the years the battlements have been modified with embrasures for rifles and other fighting devices. The interior is divided into three areas, some of which date back to the 15th century, when the building passed from the Aragonese to the Caetani family and was used as a residence. Currently, the Mola Tower houses the Historical Archives of the City of Formia and is a venue for exhibitions, ceremonies and conferences.

Location

The Roman Cisternone is a cistern for collecting water, dating back to the 1st century B.C. It is a large underground structure, built in the 1st century B.C. to collect water brought by aqueducts and then redistribute it in the city, it consists of a room with an irregular perimeter, divided into 4 naves by rows of columns.

Location

The Tomb of Cicero is a monumental mausoleum from the Augustan period of the Roman Empire. It is traditionally attributed to Cicero, who had his villa nearby, where he was hit by Mark Antony’s assassins, although this attribution is still doubtful.

According to tradition, the orator’s coffin was placed in the tomb after his hands and tongue, the symbols of the philosopher’s eloquence, were cut off.

On the hill above, 100 meters away as the crow flies, is the tomb of Tulliola, Cicero’s beloved daughter.

Location

he Villa of Gianola is a large maritime villa of the Roman age.

Traditionally, the large complex has been attributed to Mamurra, a very rich and powerful knight of Caesar’s time, originally from Formiae and known to have owned luxurious residences both in the Gulf and in Rome itself. On closer inspection, there are no certain elements of attribution, except for a weak epigraphic evidence from the area and the persistence, for the area, of the toponym Mamurranum.

Sperlonga Tourist Attractions

Location

The Villa of Tiberius is a large Roman villa that belonged in the first century AD to the Roman emperor Tiberius. Since 1963 the villa has been included in the visiting itinerary of the National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga.

It was in this cavern that the episode narrated by Suetonius and Tacitus probably occurred: in 26 AD. Sejanus saved the emperor’s life by protecting him with his body during a collapse of some rocks during a banquet, which killed some servants. Later the villa was adorned with other sculptures, reaching back to the late imperial period.

In the 18th century a small ravine to the north was used as a chapel (an inscription remains, “Ave Crux Sancta”).

Location

In 1957, during the construction of the coastal road between Terracina and Gaeta, a large number of marble fragments were discovered, extraordinary for the quality of the sculptures and the size of the blocks. Some of the sculptures turned out to be originals from the Hellenistic period (around 180 B.C.). The Sperlonga National Archaeological Museum was built in 1963 to house the sculptures found.
